A zero noise solution for a residential area

The Nottingham Express Tramway Project was facing a hard-to-solve challenge. How would they provide silent power to the sites in heavily populated residential areas for a site that needed to operate 24/7?

The solution was two silent running Powercubes that we’re able to provide power to the site welfare and also support the security guards through the night. In each compound, power was automatically managed with the generators running (and also charging the Powercubes) in the daytime and the Power Cubes running at night time. The Power Cube is an advanced battery unit that stores and delivers clean silent power. It works alongside a generator and can be pre-programmed to switch a generator off and power the site by its battery instead. Once the batteries are discharged the generator takes over, powering the site whilst also recharging the batteries.




Hired mainly for zero noise benefits, the two Powercubes offered the required silent power for residents in the evening where the generator caused a nuisance.

By turning off the generator at night our solution saved 4,756 L Red Diesel and the associated cost of fuel.

Additional benefits were that the lower generator running hours meant less need for engine service and that servicing could be carried out any time, any day without any interruption to the operation of the site. Fewer refueling visits were necessary too.

Running hours of the generator reduced significantly leading to a c comparative reduction in the need for routine maintenance. Fewer breakdown issues were also then encountered because of better utilisation.

A substantial saving of 12,601Kg CO2e was achieved over the period of the hire compared to what would be been experienced had a generator solution had been in place. Furthermore, substantial air quality improvements were enjoyed through the reduction in NOx, CO and Particulate Matter (PM).
